A vertical dotted line is included to indicate the site of the section used for the following sagittal image.

Next, a large sagittal (side cut-away) view of the anterior aspect of the abdomen including the anterior abdominal wall. This image clearly illustrates the pre-operative condition of an individual. This image shows a large closure sponge adherent to the anterior fascia in the subcutaneous space beneath the previously created abdominal incision site. This grey mesh-like sponge is covered by pockets of granulation tissue and surrounded by purulence with inflammation of the surrounding tissues. An extensive ventral hernia is also included in this sagittal view.
