Description: This stock medical exhibit features a left carotid artery dissection with subsequent brain injuries. An orientation image of female silhoutte shows the pathway of blood flow from the heart to the brain. The next four images demonstrate: normal blood flow in the left carotid artery, post-accident condition with a tear of the inner layer of the arterial wall, formation of a blood clot (thrombus) around the tear, and formation of embolus. The final graphic depicts a left cerebral infarction resulting from the embolus becoming lodged in the brain and prohibiting blow flow to the brain tissue.
