Description: This medical illustration series shows two images: one depicting normal fetal respiration in utero, and the other showing the fetus in distress due to aspiration of meconium (fecal waste products in the womb) fluid. Because of the presence of excess meconium in the baby's lung tissues, the lungs cannot properly inflate, nor transfer oxygen across the alveoli (alveolar) membranes following birth.
