The second illustration shows the pre-operative condition in an enlarged sagittal view of the lower cervical and upper thoracic spine, including compression of the spinal cord. The third illustration shows the first step in the procedure, in which an incision is made into the anterior neck to expose the cervical vertebrae. The fourth illustration shows the excision of the intervertebral disc. The fifth illustration shows the decortication of the C7 and T1 endplates in preparation for bone graft. The sixth illustration shows the placement of a plate and screws into the cervical spine.
