Conforme os glóbulos vermelhos fluem através da veia, células de movimento mais lento e outros elementos do sangue se acumulam nas válvulas venosas, criando um coágulo sanguíneo estacionário, ou trombo, bloqueando o fluxo sanguíneo na veia. Quando o trombo se liberta da válvula, passa a se chamar êmbolo, e viaja através do coração e dos pulmões. A última parte da animação mostra o êmbolo se alojando no tecido pulmonar para formar uma potencial ameaça vital chamada embolia pulmonar.
