This stock medical exhibit depicts the post-surgical infection of left ankle fractures resulting in the loss of a significant amount of bone in the distal tibia. The first illustration shows the post-accident condition, with displaced fractures of the tibia and fibula. The second illustration shows the initial fixation. The third illustration is a close-up showing non-union of the tibial fracture and an infection of one of the pin sites of the external fixation device. The fourth illustration shows the removal of the external fixation device. The fifth illustration shows the infection in the distal tibia, and the final illustration shows the post-operative condition with a significant amount of bone removed from the distal tibia.
